Backing up at 40 miles per hour?

Oh man! Is everyone ok?

I’m sure you’re giving her support. Even if physically ok there must be some mental trauma.

Goddamn that's a lot of damage for reversing.

I’d make a joke, but there is one less Pacifica and one less Murano in this world due to me being involved in a similar situation .

she's beating herself pretty good. unfortunately i just grabbed a couch and left town. i helped as much as i could.

Well that’s good at least.

Impact scope probably looks worse than the actual kinetic energy involved, to protect the people. Costs money to fix, but hard to put a price on lives and health.
Bet it’s a sobering moment, though. Hopefully they get through it stronger and wiser.

It happens.. let her know it’s not her fault, and nobody was hurt.
Parents crashing into things is becoming more of a thing on this side of 40..

Glad to see everyone is physically okay (from the other comments).
People make mistakes. I was with a friend of mine (~age 18) who was backing into a parking space and got on the gas well enough to back over the concrete hump-thing and smack into a tree (which fortunately kep the car from going over the 8' drop behind the spot).

Sheeee-it. Glad nobody was badly hurt (I’m assuming?)

How do you do it?
![]() 06/11/2019 at 19:40 |

35 miles per hour
![]() 06/11/2019 at 19:41 |

But that is a good thing

yikes... I worry about my folks doing something like that. . My mother-in-law pulled right out in front of a semi doing about 50 a few years ago - she just didn’t look left pulling out into a fast 2 lane road.... (she was fine, her Jimmy was totaled..)

Amazing how much damage a small mistake can do in a car. Scary stuff. Could happen to anyone on a bad day.

Sorry to see that. I’m glad she’s ok. Is she getting to the age where the family needs to think about taking her keys? They took my great-grandfather’s keys after he ran both sides of his car down the bollisters at the end of his own driveway. I’m not even sure he knew he did it.

Oh wow....(
not a commentary on your mom, please don’t take offense! Just a legitimate wonder!)
I just have never understood how somebody who has had their license for X number of years can get the pedals mixed up when doing it subconsciously
while driving for so long...?

Is insurance totaling
both?

What kind of engine is powering that couch?

Basically echoing what CaptDale said, you did the world a favor.
![]() 06/11/2019 at 21:15 |

Ehh, the pedals didn’t exactly pull a fast one on her and switch places when she wasn’t looking...
It was absolutely her fault. At least no one was hurt, but there’s no one and nothing else to blame but the person who was operating the vehicle.

it’s my guess muscle memory played a role here. she was baking up and so her body was likely just not lined up like it normally is and when she got the gas thinking it was brake her muscle memory likely told her to hit it more on account of thinking it was already in the break pedal. it's like trying to do something you've done your whole life with your not dominant hand... your body should know what's up but your brain can't make heads or tails of it.

i don't think i recall anyone saying it wasnt her fault. seems unnecessary to say.

I certainly wasn’t saying it to be a dick, but was replying to vicali.
